If you’re looking to #SupportLocal, one really good way to do it is to get Gloom and Doom when it comes to PlayStation 4 & 5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch later this month.
Created by solo Singaporean developer Drew Pan at Neo Tegoel Games, it’s a supernatural visual novel inspired by 90s indie comedy slacker films, and was first released for PC in 2021.
It tells the story of Wynona, a part-time video store clerk who is seemingly unable to die, and Gloom, a depressed wraith sentenced to destroying demons for eternity. Together, the unlikely duo set off across a post-apocalyptic landscape, meeting angels, demons and other fantastical creatures, to find meaning and purpose in life (or unlife, in the case of Gloom).
Despite its (ahem) gloomy title and overtone, Gloom and Doom actually takes heavy comedic cues from films like Clerks and Dazed and Confused. In the wake of this dark and bleak setting, the characters and story discuss relatable issues such as depression, suicide, mental illness and the like.
Now, console players can experience the quirky-yet-cathartic story in Gloom and Doom on consoles. Here are the release dates for the various platforms:
- Nintendo Switch – 19 July 2022
- Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S – 19 July 2022
- PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5 – TBC July 2022
If you’re keen on trying out the game on PC first, it’s currently on sale on Steam for S$7.40 (RP: S$18.50) as part of the Steam Summer Sale, ending on 7 July.
