Singapore’s first truly professional esports team, Chaos Theory, will be competing in the first 2018 season of Overwatch Contenders in the Pacific region – the
first and only Singaporean team to conquer the Overwatch Open Division as well as Contenders trials in the Pacific region to qualify.
Featuring a total prize pool of USD $138,810, Chaos Theory joins 11 of Asia-Pacific’s best Overwatch teams in the tournament hailing from South Korea, Thailand, Australia, Japan, and Taiwan, and will kick off the Overwatch Contenders season with its first official game against Talon Esports.
Chaos Theory founder Drew Holt-Kentwell is optimistic about what this means for esports in Singapore:
Chaos Theory is so proud to be the first Singaporean team competing in the first season of Overwatch Contenders Pacific. It is truly an incredible achievement for a homegrown team to fly the Singapore flag high, whilst competing at such a high level overseas. We hope that this inspires more back home to pursue esports seriously, and for more to recognize the growing potential of esports in Singapore.
Contenders tournaments made their debut in 2017 with two seasons in Europe and North America and have produced many current teams and players at the top of the game at the global Overwatch tournament, Overwatch League. In 2018, Contenders has been expanded to the Pacific region for the first time, creating more opportunities for players around the world to get noticed by Overwatch League scouts.
Chaos Theory first made headlines when it launched in September 2017 as Singapore’s first truly professional esports organization, offering players full-time contracts, private medical healthcare, and pension fund contributions. Chaos Theory currently houses an Overwatch team, a PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds squad and solo team, and three Twitch streamers. The Overwatch Contenders Pacific will be held at the Blizzard Arena in Taipei, Taiwan from 22 March to 12 May 2018.
