All eyes are on the month of June to deliver the latest and greatest coming to video games. And what a start to this month of gaming following the latest PlayStation State of Play digital event that aired earlier today.
From Capcom’s Resident Evil 4 remake to Final Fantasy XVI, we were certainly blown away by what’s coming from Sony’s first- and third-party offerings. Without further ado, here’s a full list of games that were showcased at this edition’s PlayStation State of Play!
Resident Evil 4 Remake – 24 March 2023
One of the most iconic games in the early 2000s gets a current-gen makeover in Resident Evil 4. Leon S. Kennedy is front and centre once again as the central focus of the game, naturally, and does he (and the baddies he’ll be going up against) look incredible with PlayStation 5 graphics. And the best part? We only need to wait for next year to get our hands on the remake.
Resident Evil Village (PSVR2) – TBA
Following the RE4 remake trailer was a PSVR2 version of Resident Evil Village. If you’ve played through the game before, it’ll certainly be worth a while delving back into the shoes of Ethan Winters – this time in full VR.
The Walking Dead: Saints and Sinners Chapter 2 (PSVR2) – TBA 2022
The second chapter of The Walking Dead: Saints and Sinners launches later this year, with more story to consume, along with more ways to hack, slash and shoot at the hordes of walkers (erm, zombies) shambling toward you in VR.
No Man’s Sky (PSVR2) – TBA
Indie gaming success story No Man’s Sky is coming to PSVR2 sometime soon! If you’re looking to truly immerse yourself in a planet-hopping experience, this could be the game to quench that thirst.
Horizon Call of the Mountain (PSVR2) – TBA
While we’ve only recently sunk our teeth into Horizon Forbidden West, Guerrilla Games were already hard at work expanding the world of the franchise and bringing it to PSVR2 this time. This time, we take on the role of a brand-new character named Rask, though we may get a chance to meet the main games’ protagonist Aloy somewhere in the story.
In addition, a free update comes to Horizon Forbidden West, available now, with New Game+ and new difficulty modes.
Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered (PC) – 12 August 2022
Insomniac’s 2018 masterpiece joins the likes of Horizon Zero Dawn and God of War in a PC port of Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered complete with all of the original game’s DLC. Let’s hope it has widescreen support as well.
Stray – 19 July 2022
Everyone’s favourite cat adventure game is coming just next month! In Stray, you play a titular stray cat who slinks about in the alleys of a dystopian cyberpunk city, solving puzzles in order to find their way home. The game will be available for download for free on PlayStation Plus Extra and at higher tiers at launch.
The Callisto Protocol – 2 December 2022
While we eagerly await the remake of Visceral Games’ Dead Space and, of course, Capcom’s Resident Evil 4 remake sometime next year, it looks like The Callisto Protocol could be one title to whet our appetites till then. Developed by ex-Dead Space veterans, this third-person zombie shooter takes place in a prison that has suddenly been infected by an alien virus, turning most of its inmates and staff into horrific aberrations that the protagonist must destroy in order to escape the facility alive.
Rollerdrome – 16 August 2022
Part roller disco, part battle royale, Rollerdrome looks to shake up the online multiplayer battle royale formula with refreshing cel-shaded graphics, and a pumping 80’s-inspired soundtrack to boot. Definitely one to look out for when it rolls around in August.
Eternights – Early 2023
If one can find love in a hopeless place, an apocalypse is certainly the most appropriate setting for it. Eternights is half-action RPG, half-dating sim. Players fight their way through post-apocalyptic dungeons, and form relationships with and go on dates with other party members…? One of the more unusual titles to come out of this State of Play presentation, but still one to look out for simply for its interesting premise.
Street Fighter VI – TBA 2023
After being first teased earlier this year to much fanfare, we finally get our first looks at Street Fighter VI. This time, it looks as though we’re getting an open-world section as players roam around in search of the next fight. But of course, we can’t ignore how gorgeous the game looks on the PS5’s engine as we were also treated to a glimpse of gameplay footage.
Tunic – 27 September 2022
First released on PC, Finji’s Tunic is a great roguelike with a cutesy art style and rotating isometric visual component to shake up the formula. Don’t be fooled by this game’s visuals, though – it’s a tough game not for the faint of heart, but certainly worth your while if you persevere.
Season: A Letter to the Future – Autumn 2022
Of all the titles to be presented in this State of Play, perhaps none are as contemplative and relaxing as Season: A Letter to the Future. Playing as a young woman, you embark on a solo journey on your bicycle across the countryside, taking photos and journaling life as we know it, before the entire world disappears. A game to wind down after long days in the office, that’s for sure.
Final Fantasy XVI – Summer 2023
After what seemed like an eternity since its initial announcement in 2020, we finally have our first gameplay trailer for Final Fantasy XVI. The franchise may have gone back to its classic fantasy roots, but it keeps things looking modern with a fast and fluid action-oriented gameplay style. From gorgeous, souped-up versions of classic Final Fantasy summons like Shiva, Ifrit and Bahamut, to the stellar soundtrack by Masayoshi Soken (Final Fantasy XIV), we’re certainly eager to dive into the world of Valisthea in Summer 2023.
In just half an hour, we were certainly wowed by this showing of what’s to come on the PS4 and PS5. And June has only just begun, with more gaming showcases yet to roll around in the weeks to come. Which games from the PlayStation State of Play are you most looking forward to?
