Arguably the main difference between parenthood and roguelike games is that the latter lets you try and try again without fear of real-life consequences. But what if you’re a parent who wants to do a bit of both?
That’s what games like No Place For Bravery by Glitch Factory and Ysbryd Games are for. Launching in Q4 2021 for Nintendo Switch and Steam for PC, No Place For Bravery puts players in the shoes of Thorn, a former soldier hell-bent on seeking out his long-lost daughter Leaf. Aided by his foster son, Phid, he braves a war-torn world riddled with dangers and horrors of all sorts.
Set in beautifully-rendered pixel-style environments, players dash, block and parry while taking on swathes of enemies in real time, while striking them down with the swing of Thorn’s sword. If you’ve played the likes of Hyperlight Drifter, Children of Morta or Enter the Gungeon, the look, sound and feel of this game might be right up your alley.
At its crux, however, No Place For Bravery sheds light on how the decisions parents make leave a deep impact on their children.
“The actions of parents resonate long after the fact,” said Matheus Queiroz, developer at Glitch Factory in a press release. “No one ever truly knows how to raise a child in an unpredictable, unforgiving world. Mistakes will happen and we must live with them. This story—and our own journey creating it—is an expression of that.”
